Plans have officially been released for the structure that will replace the current Mass Ave fire station.
This $43M project will include a complete overhaul of not only the fire station, but the entire Mass Ave cultural district’s look and feel. The team selected for this project includes J.C. Hart Co.; Strongbox Commercial (led by Paul Kite) and Schmidt Associates will oversee the projects. These are two very experienced firms and have worked on several Indianapolis area projects. JC Hart specializes in apartment buildings and has worked on several in Indy, Carmel and Bloomington. Schmidt Associates’ portfolio includes the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument Restoration and the 3Mass Condo building just up the road from this project.
Here’s the overview of the project:
- $43M cost
- 235 apartments
- 40,000 sq feet of ground-floor retail
- 2-levels of underground & surface parking
- $100,000 in local artwork
- Giant electronic mesh art display at the building corner
“We think this development could be one of the finest ‘live, work, play’ locations in the city of Indianapolis,” said developer, John C Hart

This massive project is scheduled to begin sometime in 2014. But will it bring new life new life, focus to Indy’s art scene and a Times Square type atmosphere to Mass Ave? And how will this affect the Mass Ave real estate market? Whenever such a drastic change is proposed for a historical area, there are going to be strong feelings both for and against.
