Tennessee native Barb Bender is on a roll. A Realtor and Associate Broker with Newkirk Realty, she has held her license since 2002. However, it is really during the past 12 months that she is gaining momentum as a real estate expert, and hitting her stride.
Barb was entrenched in the corporate world, having spent many years with an international freight forwarding company as a controller with nine branches under her purview. Quite a bit of travel to branches on the west coach had Barbara looking for something with a little more freedom, and a little less rat race.
It would be 10 more years until her nascent passion for decorating and updating houses spun into a career in real estate. She and her husband were already real estate investors, and since she already had the license, she took the plunge in 2014 and got out of the corporate hustle and bustle. She told Rob (Newkirk) she was going to quit her job, and put the license he had been holding on her behalf since 2012 to work.
In January of this year she really started amping up her activity at Newkirk Realty. “I love the freedom that this profession offers, and the knowledge that you gain on a daily basis,” says Barb.
“Just yesterday at the office, Rob asked if I would be interested in helping with a short sale. Of course I said ‘yes!’ I need someone I can learn from and Rob was perfect.”
A passion for historic homes
Her interest in refurbishing old homes only makes her that much more of an asset to Newkirk Realty. She and her husband are fixing up a house in the Mapleton-Fall Creek area, built in 1895. Her excitement about this was apparent! The expertise she is gaining in the process of fixing up her own investment homes certainly transfers to a greater awareness and passion for the process as she serves her clients.
This shows in the busy month she recently had — June was pretty hectic for her! Barb does not concentrate on one particular geographic area, but she does notice a pattern with her clients: Their number one concern is price. “They don’t want to be house poor,” she said. “And I can help make sure they aren’t.”
NOTE: Each of the posts in our Agent Spotlight Series will ask the same question to wrap things up:
What is something that most people may be surprised to know about you?
“I’ve always wanted to board horses and own a small ranch. I grew up riding as a kid and just love that. Another dream is to walk the Appalachian trail.”
