The historic Home and Garden Tour, presented by the Meridian-Kessler Neighborhood Association, celebrates its 39th year this June. The annual home and garden tour takes place Saturday and Sunday, June 16th and 17th. This event is one of the oldest and largest home tours in Indiana, offering views of vintage homes with unique designs. Large estates as well as bungalows and cottages are featured during the tour.
The theme of this year’s tour is “I Love My Home Because ….” This theme was chosen to express the many reasons residents of this charming and diverse neighborhood love their historic homes. Seven homes and gardens will be presented. The homes are selected on the basis of distinguishing architectural features as well as interior and exterior design.
Meridian-Kessler was originally located on the outskirts of the city. It became a highly desirable area in the early 20th century. The home tour was created in the 1970’s to showcase the beauty of the neighborhood and its vintage homes.
The home tour is the largest source of funds for Meridian-Kessler, and has contributed to the continued renewal of the neighborhood. Volunteer participation is essential for the success of the tour. There are many ways to contribute. Subcommittees include Home Selection, Home Reviews, Publicity, Planning, Advertising, Host/Hostess, and Sponsorship. You can also be a guide, or offer your home to be shown. Volunteers have wonderful opportunities to make new friends while working for the benefit of their neighborhood. You can visit the event website for more information- www.mkhometour.com
Pre-sale tickets for the tour are available for $12 online or by visiting any of the following starting June 1: Fresh Market (54th/College), G. Thrapp Jewelers (56th/Illinois), or any Café Patachou or National Bank of Indianapolis location.
The home tour is the ONLY fundraiser for Meridian Kessler Neighborhood Association (MKNA). Supporting the home tour helps MKNA’s efforts to:
- Pay for street lighting in previously poorly lit areas
- Support IPD financially and with volunteers
- Promote revitalization projects
- Underwrite community grants
- Help create and support local schools
- Tackle timely issues such as property taxes
- Host all-neighborhood meetings, as well as business and clergy breakfasts
- Publish a bi-monthly newsletter
Tickets can be purchased the day of the event for $15 at any tour home.
