There are two kinds of lists: those you want to be on, and those you DON’T want to be on.
Combining the two is Movoto, which annually compiles the list of safest and the more dangerous suburbs in America.
Public relations folks in Hamilton County couldn’t ask for a better talking point, as both the City of Carmel and the Town of Fishers ranked #1 and #2 respectively in the Movoto 10 Safest Suburbs to Live in America list. Carmel’s 83,000 residents and Fishers 79,000 should be pleased.
The Growth of Two Cities
Carmel and Fishers have grown at a rapid pace the past decade. Ambitious plans – and leaders to implement them – have allowed both communities to thrive. Carmel has the eclectic Arts and Design district with the Center for the Performing Arts rivaling any concert hall in the US for breadth and depth of programming. Fishers’ Nickel Plate District is the epicenter for culture and history with entertainment, festivals and restaurants. Both communities have an extensive park and trail system, and great schools. Fishers will even be graduating from an official ‘town’ designation to a city later this year. Residents may soon take exception with being called a “suburb” of Indy, as they both have so much to offer on their own. Landing on the Safest Suburbs list is another feather in their cap.
Rankings are One of Many Tools to Decide
How important is this designation to people? Safety does come into play along with school systems, climate, proximity to work and family and employment opportunities when homebuyers are choosing a place to live. When it comes to crime statistics, though, they can be fluid. An uptick in crime one year often can mean an increased effort by law enforcement the next, which affects the crime rate in a positive way the following year. A general awareness of crime in your area and taking appropriate precautions with personal and property safety is always prudent, however, in either a safe OR crime-ridden neighborhood. Be sure to keep current on the latest innovations in home security systems.
Remember: If you’re in the market for a home you’ll be in for a few years, these kind of lists are a great starting point, but they can and do change from year to year.
