Broad Ripple residents will soon have a new place to park. The new garage, which the Keystone Group is building, is finally underway. Some complications had delayed the start of the project for months. A flood plain variance was needed, because the ground floor of the garage would have been below the elevation level required by the city. Keystone has since revised their plans, which have now been approved by the Department of Code Enforcement. The revisions include concrete walls at the bottom of the garage on the west and south sides, and removable flood-control panels on the east side.
The parking structure will be located at College, Broad Ripple Avenue and Westfield Boulevard. The new garage will be an asset to Broad Ripple, creating convenience for residents and restaurant/bar goers, and contributing to the overall appeal of the area. It will have more than 300 spaces for vehicles, bicycle parking, a charging station for electric cars, and 25,000 square feet of retail space.
The construction of the garage is being subsidized by $6.3 million in parking meter revenues. This allows the city to create a residential parking permit program, making some parking spaces available only to residents of the area. Such a program would be good news for those who sometimes have to park a distance away from their homes.
Most Broad Ripple residents agree that there is great need for the parking space. However, everyone will have to adapt to the changes that come with a large construction project. College Avenue and Westfield Boulevard is always a rather busy intersection. While the parking is being built, the southbound merging lane of College Avenue will be closed – so allow more time for your commute if you drive that route on a regular basis.
The project is expected to be completed in March, 2013.
