This may be the golden rule for customer service: Your customer doesn’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. If you are buying or selling a home in Indianapolis and you’re looking for a Realtor that lives by that mantra, meet Newkirk Realty Agent and Associate Broker Debra Altman-Foley.
A seasoned professional
Debra has worked with Newkirk Realty for over 7 years. Prior to being recruited by Rob Newkirk, she worked for other real estate companies, focusing on the foreclosure side of the business. Bringing her considerable talents to Newkirk Realty was an astute decision for them both. Just a quick glance through Debra’s LinkedIn profile shows an impressive series of recommendations peppered with comments such as “she is a master of the consultative sales approach” and “her attention to detail and caring attitude make her a great client advocate.”
Whether it’s buyers or sellers, Debra has thoughts about both sides of the business. “Some Realtors will just work with sellers, as buyers are much more time consuming, but I like them both.” She finds some listings can be particularly gratifying. “If I have a challenging listing – the house is not going to sell itself. If you can help someone, maybe do a short sale and avoid foreclosure, it is very rewarding.” Also rewarding she says is working with first-time buyers. “I really enjoy teaching them about the process.”

There are a lot of Realtors out there, and one attribute that sets Debra apart from her peers is her blunt honesty with a seller. “I’m pretty cut and dry. Agents will tiptoe around to get the listing. I don’t waste people’s time. I am very straightforward about the pricing. I won’t take a listing if we can’t agree on price. Sometimes I have to say, ‘I hope I don’t hurt your feelings but this will help sell your house.’ If you have purple paint on the walls, we have to change that.”
Her tactics produce results. She recently passed the $21 million mark in sales for Newkirk Realty.
Caring deeply about each and every client, combined with a robust sellers’ market, can make for long days for Debra, who also has an 18-month old son. However, she handles the demands of being a mom — while cultivating new clients and delivering top-notch customer service to her current ones — with finesse. When a buyer wants to see a house, she has to respond or it may be off the market the next day. “It wreaks havoc on my schedule some days. Just the other day I fixed dinner, ran out the door, showed a house, wrote up an offer right after. But, I kind of like that aspect of the business — it keeps things interesting. “
