(This post is part of an Agent Spotlight Series) Get to know the agents who’ll be working for you at Newkirk Realty!)
Basso is a native of the east side of Indianapolis and a father of a 5 year old daughter Izabella. He has been in the real estate industry for 7 years, and was working in the commercial side of the business when he met Rob Newkirk. Coming on board as an agent with Newkirk Realty was a perfect fit for Basso, as it complements his property management experience nicely. Property management focused less on people and more on the buildings themselves. In his position as a Realtor at Newkirk, he does just the opposite.
Don’t choose a Realtor just because they have a Realtor’s license
Basso has a construction background too, and often knows quite a bit more about the home you’re interested in buying because of that insight. “If a Realtor can’t tell you how a house is built, they shouldn’t be able to sell you a house. It’s scary how little some Realtors know,” says Basso. “My number one piece of advice when picking a Realtor is do your homework about them and their background. There are many Realtors out there who just get a license to sell houses. You’d be amazed at the terrible deals people get into.”
Basso has experience in flipping properties — buying a home and making improvements in order to sell it at a profit — as well. He does this on his own, and through working with investors at Newkirk. Investors buy the houses through Newkirk Realty, then Basso will manage their money through hiring of construction companies and contractors. Anything that’s done to improve that property and put it back on the market he oversees. “I like working with investors. I like the idea of making neighborhoods better.”
Looks can be deceiving
He enjoys the residential side too, but on both sides of the business he has had to deal with hesitation from clients about his youth. “It’s always a mountain I have to climb being young. It’s hard to pick up clients because they think there’s no way I know what I am doing. I walked into an investment meeting once and we sat for 20 minutes. I finally asked what we were waiting for. The reply was ‘We’re waiting for your boss to get here.’”
He doesn’t let that bias slow him down. On the contrary, with a drive and excitement about his work and the industry, his youth is an incredible asset. So let’s see: Investing, construction and selling experience combined with seemingly limitless energy and ideas galore? Seems like a pretty good place to start when looking for a Realtor!
NOTE: Each of the posts in our Agent Spotlight Series will ask the same question to wrap things up:
What is something that most people may be surprised to know about you?
“I’m a violinist. I’ve played since I was 7. I had a scholarship to the University of Indianapolis.”
